INTRODUCING VINNY – YOUR ONLINE DESTINATION FOR YOGA IN MELBOURNE.

Posted on 31 January 2019 by Alyce Greer, CORE+ writer

We were lucky enough to catch up with Andie Pineda, the brains behind soon-to-launch Vinny Yoga – your new online destination for the best yoga teachers, studios, workshops, and beyond.  Read on below to learn more about Andie’s inspiring story in dreaming up this clever creation.

We’ve seen the teasers for Vinny and we’re so excited for it to launch. Can you tell us a bit more about it?
I’m excited that you’re excited! Vinny is a comprehensive online destination for Melbourne yoga. We carefully curate a selection of Melbourne’s best yoga teachers, studios, events and resources to help you find the kind of yoga that’s right for your practice. Think of us as your newest yoga pal, keeping you motivated and up-to-date on all the latest yoga happenings.

Where did the idea for Vinny come from? It’s genius!
The beginnings of Vinny started when I moved to Melbourne three years ago. I had a regular yoga practice but I didn’t know any other yogis here, so I was trialing many different studios and looking for ones that resonated with me. With a plethora of Vinyasa style studios in the northside alone, let’s just say it was an overwhelming and time-consuming process! With a bit of patience and luck, I eventually found my studio and my favourite teachers. When you vibe with a studio or teacher, it’s a magical feeling; a feeling of being home.

What steps did you take to get to the point of launch?
In January 2018 — the night of the super blue blood moon — I was telling my partner Jimmy about my current yoga dilemma. All my favourite yoga teachers were either moving away, on maternity leave, or no longer teaching — I didn’t know what I was going to do! After brainstorming business ideas, we eventually landed on a simple online directory concept that featured yoga studios and more importantly, yoga teachers. Systems like Mindbody and ClassPass didn’t tell much about the teachers themselves, so we wanted to create one platform that provided in-depth information on who they are, where they teach, and how their style. A couple of months later, I quit my full-time job to focus on creating Vinny and have been working hard on it since!

Who is Vinny for? Is it for yogis only?
Vinny is the meeting point between yoga studios, teachers, and students. We offer information and resources for anyone that wants to deepen their yoga practice, whether you practice every day, have never done a class in your life, or tried one class and hated it! I do believe there’s a yoga practice for everyone, it’s just about finding what’s right for you. Luckily, there is so much on offer here in Melbourne and that’s where Vinny comes in.

It sounds like yoga is a huge part of your life! Has it always been that way?
Yoga has been a big part of my life for about nine years. I tried a few different styles like Bikram and Ashtanga before finding my home with Vinyasa. I loved dropping out of my thinking head and into my body, just moving with my breath in a fluid, dance-like way. That’s still how I like to practice to this day. I recently completed my 200 Hour YTT with Yoke Yoga and can be found teaching at their South Melbourne studio every Saturday.

Have you had help along the way? Who’s been your guiding light?
I’ve had so much help and support along the way. Endless jam sessions with old friends and new friends alike, but hands-down my guiding light has been my partner Jimmy. He’s just as much a part of Vinny as I am — both in a creative and business sense.

How about influences? What or who has inspired you during the process?
Honestly, Melbourne as a whole has been my biggest influence. The people and the culture exude creativity and passion to give shit a go and not be afraid to fail. I love Melbourne’s support for local, independent small businesses with a purpose. I can’t imagine starting Vinny anywhere else!

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced?
There’s been lots of little challenges here and there, but the biggest one has been over-designing the functionality of Vinny’s website. Because our product is the website, Jimmy and I wanted it to have every feature imaginable; we went way too deep. So the biggest learning was to strip it back and focus on launching V1 out into the world so we can observe what people are loving and not loving, and iterate from there.

Where do you see Vinny in five years? Taking over the world?
I’m really open to Vinny evolving as it does, as long as we are helping more people find and deepen their yoga practice. Whether that’s online or offline, in Melbourne or in other cities with high-quality, engaged yoga communities. I have a lot of excitement for how Vinny will grow from here!
